Overview

Il Diavolo E L'acqua Santa is a modest yet authentic Venetian restaurant nestled on Calle de la Madonna in the heart of Venice. It embodies the spirit of traditional Venetian cuisine, offering a dining experience that is both genuine and unpretentious. Situated away from the busiest tourist paths, this spot attracts locals and insightful travelers who appreciate intimate settings paired with heartfelt, rustic dishes.

The dining area is compact and cozy, reflecting an old-world charm that invites a diverse mix of patrons—elderly couples, families with dogs, and neighborhood workers alike. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuine, a true representation of community life in Venice rather than a bustling tourist hub. In such a setting, the family-managed staff uphold a straightforward, respectful approach to service, combining professionalism with warmth, which makes guests feel welcome without intrusion.

The menu is a curated homage to Venetian seafood and classic pasta preparations. Signature dishes like the Cuttlefish Spaghetti in Black Sauce and Thin Spaghetti with Sardine Sauce and Onions capture the richness of local ingredients and culinary tradition. The Meatballs provide a rustic contrast to the fresh seafood options like the Mixed Fried Fish and Octopus Salad, showcasing the kitchen’s command over varied textures and flavors. Not to be overlooked, the Tiramisù offers a fitting conclusion, resonating with the refined simplicity Venetian desserts are known for.

For those looking to indulge in Venetian cicchetti-style dining, the Antipasto Della Casa featuring Folpo, Baccalà Mantecato, and Sarde In Saòr mirrors the local heritage, perfect for sharing and pairing with their select Spritz or Aperol Aperitifs. The Risotto Ai Frutti Di Mare further accentuates their dedication to seafood, prepared with the care and finesse expected in a place revered by both locals and discerning visitors.

While most diners praise the authenticity and quality, there has been mention of occasional mix-ups regarding extra charges, such as for vegetables, which suggests that clear communication with staff helps avoid surprises. The service stands out for being attentive and quick, with the owner’s welcoming presence reinforcing the familial vibe of the establishment.

Il Diavolo E L'acqua Santa is ideal for those seeking an authentic Venetian culinary journey in a genuine neighborhood setting. It favors quality and tradition over flashiness, making it a coveted spot for travelers eager to experience real Venetian flavors served with earnest pride. Although it can be challenging to secure a table during peak hours due to its limited space, the wait is well rewarded by the patchwork of rich tastes and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Hidden local place with excellent food and fair prices Place A slightly hidden spot with a small dining area, so finding a table at peak hours can be tricky. The atmosphere is authentic and local, with a mix of elderly couples, families and their dogs, and workers stopping by for coffee and conversation. Staff Family-managed with a traditional, old-school style of service. Professional and straightforward in their approach. Food Outstanding dishes. Both pastas were excellent and the tiramisu was absolutely worth it. Everything felt authentic and well-prepared. Prices Fair for the city and the quality of food. Not too expensive, not too cheap, just right for what you get.

Note: There is a 12% service charge. Note: When asked if you’d like vegetables, do check if it’s chargeable or part of the meal. We visited this busy restaurant after reading its Google reviews. It seems to attract quite a crowd, likely due to the many positive comments online. The service was excellent—very warm and incredibly fast. The owner, in particular, was very welcoming and provided great service. The food was decent overall. The fish was fresh and had no stinky smell, but it wasn’t super excellent—just okay. The meatballs with pasta were average—nothing particularly special. We did encounter a bit of confusion when ordering. While ordering the fish, the owner asked if we’d like vegetables. Naturally, we assumed it was included with the fish dish. Unfortunately, we later found out we were charged €8 for the vegetables, which we barely touched. This was disappointing. Overall, we paid €92 for our meal, including the service charge. While the experience had its positives, this misunderstanding left us feeling a bit let down.

Went there for dinner with the family. Had probably one the best spaghetti carbonara ever. It was just right . Rest of the crew really enjoyed the food as well. The service was excellent. It was prompt with good recommendations but never in your face.

The restaurant is away from the busy sections of Venice, also noticed that the locals were also eating here. We had some small bites which were quite tasty; also the atmosphere itself was very “rock and roll”

Fair price for a place like Venice. It was advice from the "gondole" after a gondola tour. Feels like a lot of locals visit the restaurant. The food was tasty and fresh, and the service was just "ok".
